Roma Day 1

This blog is a day late in posting, but oh well. Our first day in Rome was thurs. July 2nd. We landed in the airport around 11 am and got to the hotel around 1:30. We took a few hours to freshen up, and then hit the city. We planned on seeing the Coliseum and some other popular tourist sites. We got off the metro at the Coliseum and about and hour later it started down-pouring rain and hail. We hid out under a tree with a bunch of umbrellas...yup, I didn't have one so I got drenched. All of my stuff was wet, my clothes and hair were dripping, and my shoes were pretty much useless. It was a way cool experience though...but it would've have been much cooler through a window while I was standing inside warm and dry. Oh well. It finally finished and we were able to see some stuff, though we couldn't go inside the Coliseum. We went to a little sidewalk cafe, and I ate gelato for the first time...raspberry. It was fantastico. We wandered around the city for a bit and walked through the Musei Capitolini on Capitol hill. I felt bad because not only were we late but we were also still dripping and got the floor way wet. Oops! They were way friendlyabout it though. There was a lot of broken sculpture pieces from huge sculptures. The sculpture of the she-wolf that fed Romulus and Remus. History is a little unsure about the artist, but it was probably Antonio Pollaiuolo. We then ate dinner at the Hard Rock Cafe (yeah, it's very Italian...not) which was definitely a new cultural experience. Eating out here is more of an entertainment thing so the Italian waiters expect you to stay and chat for a while when you're finished eating. We waited for the check for almost an hour. It was crazy. We didn't get home till almost 1 in the morning and I was out! Slept like a rock. Even with the torential rain storm, jet lag, and exhaustion, the first day in Roma was amazing!
